Korean meals are communal even when the recipe is a single bowl. Banchan small plates, gochujang heat, toasted sesame and long-fermented kimchi show up from breakfast stews to late-night street snacks. Jeolla, Gyeongsang and Jeju each keep their own seafood, mountain greens and chilli habits.

Food history

Royal court cuisine, Buddhist temple cooking, and farmhouse fermentation all still sit on the modern table. Chilli arrived in the 16th–17th centuries and was adopted so thoroughly that it now feels ancestral. The 20th century added wheat noodles, American surplus ingredients, and a global restaurant language — without dropping the logic of rice, soup and shared side dishes.

Common ingredients

Techniques

  • fermentation
  • grilling
  • stewing in ttukbaegi
  • seasoning namul
  • mixing bibim
